Youth Leadership
Council

Hey, Tulsa teens! Interested in getting involved in youth sexual health?

The Youth Leadership Council is a safe space to learn more about sexual health and grow as a youth leader. And did we mention all members are paid to participate? We also cater local favorites at every meeting!

What is the Youth Leadership Council?

The Youth Leadership Council (YLC) is a paid leadership program for teens ages 14–19 who want to learn about sexual health and become advocates in their communities. Members learn about local sexual health resources, develop peer advocacy skills, and lead their own project on a sexual health topic they choose.
The program takes place from October to May each year, with applications opening in the summer and orientation held in September. The first meeting is in October, and the YLC Community Advocacy Project takes place in April or May.

Amplify’s 2026 Youth Leadership Council  focused on sexual assault awareness by hosting “Find Your Voice,” a free community event during Sexual Assault Awareness Month featuring educational presentations, community resources, and activities like hair tinsel, bracelet making, trivia, raffle prizes, and free food from local favorites. The YLC also wrote and designed a sexual assault resource, and translated it into Spanish for the first time in program history. They partnered with local organizations to share resources on platonic, romantic, and familial relationships, and created a set of five collectible bookmark comic strips with resources, reaching over 50 community members.

McLain High School 2024 Youth Leadership Council

At McLain High School, the School-Based YLC focused on pregnancy prevention by offering trivia questions about contraceptive methods. Over two days during lunch, they engaged peers with interactive activities, handed out small prizes, and shared an informative flyer on healthy and unhealthy relationship traits. Past Youth Leadership Council Projects and Member Initiatives

Healthy Relationships Zine

YLC members designed and created a Healthy Relationships Zine in 2024 that helps readers understand the foundations of a healthy relationship, recognize signs of unhealthy relationships, and learn ways to show up as their best selves in all types of relationships including family, friendships, romantic relationships, and others.

2022 Trivia Night

YLC organized a Trivia Night for young people in the Tulsa Area in Spring 2022. Partnering with Hope Testing Clinic and Youth Services of Tulsa, participants competed in 5 rounds of sexual health trivia and were able to learn about Sexual Health, LGBTQ+ History, STI Testing, Pop Culture, and Healthy Relationships in a fun, educational, youth-led setting.

2022 Transgender Day of Visibility

During Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31, 2022, four YLC members created original artwork and artist statements to affirm and support Trans history, excellence and experiences on Amplify’s social media.

NPR Interview

Two YLC members from the 2021-2022 cohort were invited to be interviewed by NPR member stations about their feelings regarding life in Oklahoma as Transgender teenagers during the height of the Oklahoma legislative session. They shared their firsthand experiences and honest feelings in a poignant interview that spoke about the experiences of many Trans youth in our state who cannot speak for themselves.

Body Positivity Workshop

A member from the 2020-2021 cohort created her own bilingual Body Positivity workshop series, which was ultimately integrated into a Tulsa Community College program for adults working with youth. She then worked with Amplify to create a proposal to share her project’s success. She also presented about the importance of a youth-centered program model at Healthy Teen Network’s conference in Miami, Florida in October 2022.
